To bring attention to the major problem of air pollution in the Mediterranean caused by high emissions from marittime traffic, Cittadini per l’Aria invites you to participate at the photo contest “A Sea of Smoke” (Un mare di fumo).
A single cruise ship produces atmospheric emissions equivalent to hundreds of thousands of cars and, for certain pollutants, millions. Ships using emissions reduction technology are extremely rare and the fuels used by the maritime sector contain as much as 3,500 times more sulphur than diesel used for road transportation. Use of maritime fuel is forbidden on land and it is treated as dangerous waste. All this air pollution is damaging for the climate, the natural environment and built heritage, and to the health of people living or working in ports as well as ship passengers.
Take a photo showing cruise ships, ferries and cargo ships emitting smoke. Upload your fotos on the bottom of this page so we can testify with the power of images the extent of the problem.
It will help everyone understand the importance of new air quality legislation in the Mediterranean. A special jury will judge the photos received and there are a number of interesting prizes. But for everyone, the main prize is really precious: our health.

REGULATIONS: The competition is open to citizens of the EU and the Adriatic basin. Minimum age for participants is 18 at the time of entry. Photos must be submitted by 30.9.2017 indicating the date and place each photo was taken. Participants in the competition may submit up to 5 images taken in the Mediterranean.. Participants must hold the rights to the material submitted, and they will retain those rights. However, all participants grant Cittadini per l’aria onlus and its partners the right to use all material submitted for their enviroonmental awareness raising activities. The photographer’s name will always be cited. The photos must not show anything violent, obscene or racist. Photos with people who can be identified but haven’t provided their consent will not be accepted. Photos must be submitted in jpg, jpeg or png format, minimum resolution 2000 pixels on the long side of the image.
